Tenebrae

Officiant: The Rev. Marnie Peterson

Reader: Charles Demers

Music: Dierdre Rogers, Jennifer Hiebert, Bruce Hoffman, Michael Law, under the direction of Rupert Lang

The order of service is available below, in text-format. Please scroll down to follow along.

This live stream takes place in the heart of Vancouver on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Our special evening service during Holy Week is Tenebrae, meaning “shadows.” This is a time for meditation on the events of the Passion and Resurrection which we will celebrate this week.

A special feature of this service of lessons, music and prayers is the poignant reading from Lamentations. Another unique feature is the gradual extinguishing of light, symbolizing the apparent victory of evil and chaos in the world. At the very end, you will hear a loud noise, symbolizing the earthquake at the resurrection. The “Christ light” will then be returned to its place. We will depart in silence, in contemplation of the acts of salvation which we celebrate this week.

Order of Service

Presider O Lord, open thou our lips

All And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Presider O God, make speed to save us.

All O Lord, make haste to help us.

Please join in the singing of the Antiphon.

Lenten Prose
Traditional Plainsong

Choir To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory: lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings:

listen O Jesu, to our supplications.

Antiphon Hear us O lord, have mercy upon us:
For we have sinned against Thee.

Choir O thou chief Cornerstone, Right Hand of the Father: Way of Salvation,

Gate of Life Celestial: Cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement.

Antiphon Hear us O lord, have mercy upon us:
For we have sinned against Thee.

Choir God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated:

bow down and hearken to thy weeping children:

pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses.

Antiphon Hear us O lord, have mercy upon us:
For we have sinned against Thee.

Choir Sins oft committed now we lay before thee: with true contrition,

now no more we veil them: grant us, Redeemer, loving absolution.

Antiphon Hear us O lord, have mercy upon us:
For we have sinned against Thee.

Choir Innocent, captive, taken unresisting, falsely accused, and for us sinners sentenced, save us, we pray thee, Jesu our Redeemer.

Antiphon Hear us O lord, have mercy upon us:
For we have sinned against Thee.

Presider Almighty and everlasting God, who forgavest the people of Nineveh

when they repented in sackcloth and ashes: Mercifully grant that we,

truly repenting of our sins, may obtain of thee perfect pardon and release;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Two lights are extinguished.

First Lesson Lamentations 1:1-14

Two lights are extinguished

Silence

Presider O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage.

All Govern them and lift them up forever.

Presider Day by day we magnify thee.

All And we worship thy Name, ever world without end.

Presider Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.

All O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.

Presider O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in thee.

All O Lord, in thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded.

Second Lesson St. John 17

Choir Tenebrae Responsory
Healey Willan

Two lights are extinguished

Silence

Presider I believe in God

All the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;

The third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,

And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church;

The Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins;

The Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen.

Presider Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

All Christ, have mercy upon us.

Presider Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Lord’s Prayer

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

Penitential Devotions

Presider Almighty and everlasting God, who forgavest the people of Nineveh

when they repented in sackcloth and ashes:

Mercifully grant that we, truly repenting of our sins,

may obtain of thee, perfect pardon and release, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Presider O God our Father, who makest thy sun to rise upon the evil and upon the good,

and sendest rain upon the just and upon the unjust:

Help us to love our enemies, and to forgive those who trespass against us,

that we may receive of thee the forgiveness of our sins,

and be made thy children in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

Presider Lord of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things:

Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion,

nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.
