This Thursday, September 30 is Truth & Reconciliation Day. For the first time it is a federal statutory holiday and many workplaces will be closed. It is also the first Truth & Reconciliation Day since the discovery of unmarked graves at former Indian Residential schools.

In consultations with Kerry Baisley, the Missioner for Indigenous Justice it was determined that the best way for the Cathedral community to mark this day is to attend Indigenous-led events and take time for personal prayer. The following events will be taking place at the Cathedral:

Thursday Morning Eucharist will be celebrated at the Cathedral at 7:30am. During the Eucharist the Cathedral’s commitment to reconciliation will be acknowledged and renewed and prayers will be included in the liturgy for reconciliation.

The Cathedral will also be open to the public from 10am to 4pm for anyone who wishes to come in and spend time in silent prayer and reflection on reconciliation.

Several other events will be taking part in the city and diocese. Cathedral clergy and parishioners are encouraged to take part in one of these events :

A Walk with Elders takes place at 9am at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hasting. The whole community is welcome to take part. The walk will start at the Cenre and proceeds to Granview Park where there will be activities, food, drum circle, crafting and sharing. From 11am to 2pm.

Dean Chris will take part in the Walk with Elders

March at University of British Columbia
