Thank You!Submitted by The Rev. Alisdair Smith Dear friends, Thank you so very much for the party after church on Sunday and the cards and gifts. Both Olivia and I were very touched by, and are so grateful for the sendoff. I was humbled by the words of thanks and the stories of connection and impact. The Cathedral and its people are my 'village.' It has been an honour to be a small part of the journey over these last two decades. Thank you, and until we meet again, |
Donations for Thanksgiving Fruit and VegetablesSubmitted by Sarah Nation Each Thanksgiving, our Altar Guild creates a beautiful display of bounty at the Altar through the use of flowers, fruit and vegetables. As we have in the past few years, there will be more of an emphasis on buying fruit and vegetables, which can then be used by the Maunday Cafe in the following weeks to provide nourishing hot soups and stews for our Maundy guests. On Sunday September 18th, 25th and October 2nd we will be collecting donations to decorate the Cathedral for our Thanksgiving Sunday services on October 9th. There will be someone to accept your donations in the Narthex after the 8:00am service and downstairs in the hall during coffee hour after the 10:30am service. If you participate in the services online or attend St. Brigids and Compline in person, you may phone Vanessa Ho during the week and make a donation using your credit card or by sending in a cheque. Thank you for your continued support as we beautify our Cathedral space and help feed our neighbours. (Photo by Ben Dobyns) |

Dean's Creation Challenge: Be a Good Steward“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” - Psalm 24:1 - Thursday, August 29, 2024 God is the ultimate owner of everything in the world. We are merely temporary caretakers or stewards of God's possessions. Good stewardship involves acknowledging this truth and using the resources entrusted to us in a way that aligns with God’s will and brings glory to God's name. During the Season of Creation [Sept 1- Oct 4], I challenge each of us to find a way through action that we can acknowledge that Creation is God's and we are called to be good stewards of it for God. Using the critical thinking skills God has endowed us with we can discern ways to be better stewards. What will we do? Are You Really There?Submitted by Leslie Buck ‘Artificial intelligence’ is the term used to denote physical, computer-based systems designed to mimic human knowing and reasoning. Sometimes the mimicry is disarmingly successful. When we use our computer or phone to obtain information on a matter of interest, we may actually be talking to an AI chatbot rather than a real person, and not realise that we are doing so. Similarly, the ChatGPT system is able to write articles like this one. Would you believe me if I said that this was in fact written by ChatGPT, not me? [...] For more infomation visit:

Ode to AlisdairSubmitted by Hadani Ditmars While dear Alisdair Smith will be sorely missed at Christchurch Cathedral, his farewell party on Sunday was a wonderful event that instilled in me a great sense of community spirit. In addition to his many qualities, I believe that bringing people together in community is one of Alisdair‘s gifts and his party reflected that. I had lovely conversations with many parishioners that I don’t often connect with and best of all I got to sing bossa nova and Besame Mucho in Alisdair’s honour with parishioner and Chilean-Canadian musician Claude Duke. It’s a funny story, but even though I’ve seen Claude at church and often walk right by the restaurant in Lonsdale where he plays on Friday evenings as it’s 50 metres from the clinic where I get regular concussion therapy, we hadn’t really spoken at length until last Sunday. Suddenly, in a magic moment in the parish hall we bonded through music, as we launched into song together with his Filipino colleague Victor Bongat on saxophone and flute. An intercultural and intergenerational group of listeners enjoyed our renditions of the Girl from Ipanema and Besame Mucho whilst chatting over cucumber sandwiches. It filled my heart with joy to be able to share food and music with fellow parishioners in celebration and gratitude for Alisdair’s years of service at the cathedral. So as the song goes Pienso que tal vez manana estaras muy lejos de aqui But luckily, for us, we will be seeing more of Alisdair in the not so distant future. In the meantime, I am grateful for the spirit of love and community that is his legacy at the Cathedral and I sincerely hope there will be more opportunities to share food and music together after Sunday services. |
