Thank You, Diogo!
We're sorry to let you know that Diogo will be leaving the Cathedral staff team. His last day of work in the office will be May 16th. His dream for his career has been to use his legal training to work in the diplomatic corps, and as such, with mixed feelings, he has accepted a position in a law firm. While he will leave a very big hole in our team, we are all very proud of him, and grateful for the wonderful way he has, and continues to contribute to the life of our Cathedral. And... the fabulous news is that Diogo has decided to remain at the Cathedral as a member! On Sunday May 25th (Africa Sunday), Diogo will be blessed and thanked for his work at the Cathedral. Please join us to express your gratitude and well-wishes for his next adventure, and in the meanwhile, please keep both Maria and Diogo in your prayers. -- We have posted a new Administrative Assistant role on the website that will take on some of Diogo's responsibilities, as well as some new ones. More news will follow in the coming weeks about staffing in the office. |

40-min forum (and Lunch+Learn): Salal and CedarLiving out Environmental Justice 40-min forum: Join us for a forum with our guest preacher of the day, the Rev. Laurel Dykstra. Laurel will speak to us about Laurel's vocation to environmental justice ministry and the ministry of Salal and Cedar. Laurel will talk to us about Laurel's book and have copies for sale. A donations box will also be available to support Salal and Cedar's ministries. Brown bag lunch: Following the 10.30am service, Rev. Laurel will be in the Park Room hosting a brown bag lunch+learn. Bring your lunch and come join the conversation circle on how we can live out our vocation to environmental justice! -- About Laurel: Laurel (no pronouns or they/them if you have to) started Salal + Cedar as a place for sacramental practice in nature and concrete action for ecological justice, but found community along the way. Laurel is responsible for both the big picture and coordinating moving parts. About Salal and Cedar: Rooted in place, tradition and history, Salal + Cedar is a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster that strives to be accessible to all bodies. We meet regularly for worship outdoors, education and action. We are part of a growing movement across Turtle Island (North America) of communities of Christians re-connecting to the creation-values and land covenants at the core of our tradition. Watershed Discipleship refers both to watersheds as natural geographic divisions and to the fact that we are at a watershed moment in terms of climate crisis. |

Remembering the Cathedral's First Curate, Canon Henry L. RoySubmitted by Stephen Wright On what would have been his 150th birthday we remember our first Curate, Henry LeGallais Roy (May 7, 1875 – September 20, 1953). Roy’s father was the Reverend Josias Jesse Roy, later minister of St. George’s Church, Winnipeg, a descendent of the Abraham Martin upon whose land the Battle of the Plains of Abraham was fought. Henry Roy graduated from the University of Manitoba with a silver medal in 1894, then studied at Wycliffe College in Toronto for five years. By the turn of the century Christ Church’s finances had improved to the point that Rector Tucker was authorized to hire an assistant priest. Roy was chosen and duly arrived in January 1901 – one of his first tasks was preaching at the services of commemoration for the recently deceased Queen Victoria. After the departure of Tucker in 1902 Roy acted as interim rector before the arrival of Cecil Owen in 1903. In 1905 Roy returned to Winnipeg to accept the Rectorship of St. George’s Church; his departure was considered a great loss to Christ Church, especially to the Boys’ Brigade in which he had always taken an active role. Subsequently Roy was Rural Dean of Turtle Mountain (Manitoba, 1908-1913) before serving as Assistant General Missioner for the Diocese of Rupert’s Land. In 1928 Roy was named an Honorary Canon at the Pro-Cathedral of St. Matthew in Brandon, Manitoba. These days Roy is perhaps best know as a chess organizer, a role he did not get involved in until 1936 when he was already sixty-one years old. Describing himself as a ‘run of the mine’ player, Roy noted: “By learning chess, you have a spare-time filler until you're ready for the grave. You might be an athlete, but you're a has-been at thirty – in chess there is no limit… Never aspired to become a chess expert but did try my hand at organizing chess in local, provincial and national fields. Acted as president, for eight years, of the Winnipeg Chess Club, six years of the Manitoba Chess Association, two years secretary of the Winnipeg Jewish C.C. and President, Chess Federation of Canada for five years.” Early in 1947 Roy returned to Vancouver where he became involved with the British Columbia Chess Federation. He passed away after returning from his last Annual General Meeting of the Chess Federation of Canada, having just completed his final term as President. |

New Living Stones Project Recruiting Team MembersSubmitted by Irene Pang To continue the unfinished work of Truth and Reconciliation, the Wardens and Trustees are initiating a new history project to find out about the pre-contact history of the land – the people, animals, tall cedars, and all their relations – on which the Cathedral is built. This initiative responds to motion A086 passed at the 39th General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada in 2018, which formally repudiated terra nullius and the Doctrine of Discovery, and called on each Diocese and the larger church to “be made aware of the doctrine and its effects”, “review ways that its systems still manifest the effects of the doctrine”, and “reflect upon its history and encourage all Anglicans to seek a greater understanding of Indigenous Peoples”. (Click the button below to read more on terra nullius and the Doctrine of Discovery in this blog post by your Associate People’s Warden, Irene Pang.) Come join the team to research and write up the stories of the Living Stones – the literal stones and all the life they hold – on which we stand. Experience in historical research welcome but not required. We will all learn together! Email cathedraltrc@thecathedral.ca to express your interest, or to get more information.
