I walk by the Kits Community Centre almost every day. It sits on the corner of Vine and 7th: a familiar, friendly landmark in a neighbourhood where people walk dogs, push strollers, carry yoga mats, and chat over coffee. For months, I passed a little structure outside its wall: a dry-goods pantry painted white and green, with a small fridge beside it. The hand-lettered sign above it reads, Give what you can, take what you need.

A lovely idea, I thought. And I kept walking.

Sometimes there were a few cans on the shelf, or a small bag of pasta. Sometimes a toothbrush or deodorant in the toiletries box. Sometimes nothing at all. I never...

A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Cathedral Choir leads the traditional, annual service of nine lessons and carols.

Celebrate the holiest night of the year in song. The Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir leads this music-filled, family-friendly service. Sing along to beloved Christmas carols, hear the Christmas story, and enjoy an all-ages reflection on what this night means.

Pre-registration is not required. There will be no tickets or wristbands.

Doors will open 30 minutes before the service. People with mobility issues may access the building 40 minutes before the service via the ramp that leads to the east doors, near the laneway.

The Salvation Army’s Cariboo Hill Temple Band leads this Christmas Eve service which has become a tradition in the city. Sing along with the band to your favourite carols and hymns, hear the reading of the nativity story, and join together with the rest of the city in celebrating the joy of Christmas.

Pre-registration is not required. There will be no tickets or wristbands.
