Over the years one of the hallmarks of the Cathedral has been the robust spirit of volunteerism and involvement of parishioners in lay ministries and in supporting the work of the clergy. Some people may not realize how important volunteerism is in the life of the church.  In Ephesians 2:10 we hear that “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”.  When we volunteer we are living this out.
The Lay Ministries participate in the work of Christ in the world in many different ways.  Everything from assisting congregants to their seats on a Sunday morning to preparing and serving meals through the Maundy Café ministry. If you look at the back page of the 10:30am service booklet on any given Sunday you see a list of names of people who have helped make the service happen. That is just the tip of the iceberg. So many more people volunteer their time during the week to help us live into our motto of “Open Doors, Open Heart, Open Mind.” By offering ourselves and our time we are being good stewards of the gifts God has blessed us with. As we hear in 1 Peter 4:10,  “As each has received a gift, use it to serve another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace”.
While the generosity of volunteers who give their time an energy is vital to carrying out the Cathedral’s mission in the world, many volunteers would say they actually receive so much more than they give: new friends, a place to belong, a sense of purpose  and time away from the stresses of everyday life.
As we rebuilt after the pandemic we are in need of volunteers in a number of Lay Ministries.  It does not matter how much time you have available or what skills you feel you might need but do not possess, every one of you has something that you could offer. And in whatever we do, we do it for God as we hear in Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive an inheritance as your reward”.
