Though seemingly benign in its simplicity that the earth actually belongs to God, or as eco-feminist theologian Dr. Sallie McFague contended, ‘the earth is God’s body’, and not ours to use, runs counter to popular belief.

Much of western history, religion and culture has been powered and developed under the principle of ownership and domination of the earth - and now the planet - while ignoring the consequences.  We know better now, science tells us so, and we are experiencing the complex, adverse outcomes of that mindset.

If we accept that the universe belongs to God, that belief has major implications for how we respond to God’s call “to serve the garden and keep it.” Genesis 2:15

As a starting point for The Season of Creation, gratitude is a good beginning.  

For the next five weeks, consider taking up a practice of being amazed by creation. What exists in your small corner of this earth that brings wonder and delight? An insect, sunflowers, a clear sky, bird song, clean water, fresh air, an intuitive pet, joyful interactions. Pay attention, take note, give thanks.
