I wonder if part of the desire to protect the young in our community from this aspect of [the human condition] is because we need to reckon in a new way with the presence of cruelty and hatred. We need to face unanswerable questions and present dissatisfying answers. Because evil is a part of our inheritance as humans.
State-sponsored violence punctuates Jesus’ life - beginning and end. The threat and execution of state-sponsored violence touches his family and community throughout his life.
And yet, this is the world that God chooses to be born into, deeply vulnerable, to be with us in a new way.
