The Rev. Michael Deck was ordained at Christ Church Cathedral on November 30, 1976, alongside two of the first women priests in Canada. Following his ordination, he served in the Diocese of New Westminster for three years in what was then the area parish of Fraser-Cheam, and for five years at St. Michael’s, Colebrook.
Michael then moved to the Diocese of Toronto synod office, spending three years supporting youth ministry before taking a leave to pursue an MBA at the University of Toronto. Upon graduation, he joined the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics. Over the next six years, he taught Business Ethics in the MBA program at the Rotman School of Management and served as the Clarkson Centre’s first Executive Director. In 1996, Michael was recruited by KPMG to head the development of their business ethics consulting practice.
Three years later, he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he and two partners developed consulting services and web-based software to help Canadian banks and insurance companies manage legislative and regulatory compliance. In 2004, Michael and his partners purchased that line of business to form Ethidex Inc., from which he retired at the end of 2015.
Throughout their 25 years in Toronto, the Deck family remained deeply active in local parish life. Michael served as an Honorary Assistant at St. Mary, Richmond Hill for 10 years, and at Grace Church on-the-Hill, Toronto, for 15 years.
Since retiring, Michael has been delighted to provide supply services and short interim appointments, first on the Island and now at local parishes since moving back to New Westminster in 2020.
When the weather permits, you can find Michael playing the five-string banjo on the boardwalk at the Quay, with the Mighty Fraser River at his side.
