It is a heartwarming feeling to be able to share. We tend to take so much for granted, everyday basic necessities, including food and water.
Dropping off non-perishable items at the Kitsilano Community Food Pantry has quietly become a regular part of my routine. What strikes me when I go is that there is always someone waiting.
In fact, the last time I dropped off a box of food, by the time I walked back from my car for my second trip, the first box was completely gone (which is why the "after" photo above doesn't look quite as full as it should!). On one visit, I saw an elderly woman waiting patiently. That moment really stayed with me, and it brought a mix of sadness for her situation, but also a sense of gratitude that I could offer a small bit of relief.
With Thanksgiving and the harvest season upon us, it is a natural time to reflect on abundance, especially knowing that not everyone has a full table or a holiday gathering to look forward to. This local pantry is a vital community initiative, and I want to encourage everyone to experience the power of direct giving firsthand. Consider making a drop-off a part of your own routine this season: walking up to the cupboard, sharing what you can, and feeling authentic human connection.
