In an act of solidarity among communities during these challenging times, Christ Church Cathedral is presenting a staged reading of Bar Mitzvah Boy - a comedy about Jewish identity and culture by BC writer, Mark Leiren-Young.
The Cathedral’s intention in doing this is to create a positive interfaith act of community, in association with several Jewish organizations. The Dean of the Diocese of New Westminster Christopher Pappas states, “At a time when antisemitism is once again casting its shadow across our communities, we believe that silence is not an option. As Christians, we are called not simply to speak against hatred, but to stand alongside our Jewish neighbours in friendship, solidarity, and love.”
Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre presented the world premiere of Bar Mitzvah Boy eight years ago at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. The play has since had major productions in various cities in Canada and the US, and was long-listed for the Leacock Medal for Humour. The Cathedral’s presentation will be led by distinguished director Jane Heyman, and will feature veteran actors Stephen Aberle and his daughter Rachel Aberle, marking a special occasion in their notable careers as they appear, once again, on stage together.
