In celebration of the Lunar New Year Christ Church Cathedral will be hosting a special concert by two young Vancouver classical musicians, the brother and sister duo, Barrett Bai and Nancy Bai. The guzheng is a traditional Chinese plucked zither with a history of over 2,500 years, known for its melodious, expressive sound and cultural significance. The instrument continues to be a symbol of Chinese musical heritage and artistic expression.
Nancy first encountered the guzheng when she was 7 years old. “I fell in love with guzheng after seeing a performance in second grade, and I have been playing ever since. Over the past 14 years it has helped me stay connected to my culture, and offers me a new perspective on how differently Eastern and Western music can be structured and expressed.” When 10-year old Barret Bai watched his older sister play the guzheng, he decided he wanted to do it too. So he asked her to teach him and now, 6 years later, he gives regular solo performances at Vancouver’s renowned Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, honing his music style with pieces he learned from his sister, Nancy.
