HUB: 10 cycling safety tips for tackling fall and winter conditions like a pro:

1. Check Your Bike: Before heading out, ensure your bicycle is in good working condition. Check the tires, brakes,
lights, and gears to make sure everything is functioning properly. To learn more about how to do an ‘ABC (Air,
Brake, Chain) Quick Check’, watch this video.
2. Dress in Layers: Wear moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away from your body. Add insulating layers for
warmth and a windproof and waterproof outer layer to protect against rain and cold wind.
3. Stay Visible: With shorter daylight hours, make yourself as visible as possible. Studies have shown that using bike
lights during the day lowers your risk of collision with a motor vehicle by 47%. Equip your bike with lights both in
the front and rear. Consider wearing reflective clothing, accessories, and gear, such as reflective vests and ankle
bands.
4. Wear a Helmet and Gloves: Always wear a helmet to protect your head in case of accidents. Cold-weather gloves
with good grip are essential for maintaining control of your bike in chilly conditions.
5. Choose the Right Tires: Consider switching to wider and knobby tires that offer better traction on wet or slippery
surfaces during the fall and winter months. Lowering your tire pressure can also provide more grip.
6. Mind the Road Conditions: Be cautious of wet leaves, snow, ice, and debris on the road. Reduce your speed
when encountering these hazards and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
7. Brake Carefully: Wet and cold weather can affect your bike's braking efficiency. Test your brakes before you start
your ride, and use both front and rear brakes to avoid skidding.
8. Stay Warm and Dry: Invest in quality waterproof gear, including a rain jacket, shoe covers and pants, to keep your
feet and legs dry.
9. Plan Your Route: Choose well-lit and well-traveled routes. Consider avoiding busy roads during rush hours and
sticking to separated bike lanes. Check out HUB Cycling’s free bike maps at bikehub.ca/maps or visit a
Celebration Station during Go by Bike Weeks to pick up a hard copy.
10. Carry Essential Gear: Pack a basic tool kit, spare tubes, and a pump in case you encounter a flat tire or other
mechanical issues. Also, food makes everything better. Consider carrying some energy-boosting snacks and a
thermos with a hot drink to stay warm.
