In 1923, on a geological expedition in Mongolia, Jesuit priest, scientist, and theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin found himself in an unexpected pickle. With no bread, wine, or altar, how was he to fulfill his obligation to offer a daily Mass? He realized that, in this extraordinary circumstance, the whole earth could become his altar and all of the work and suffering he and all beings endured throughout that day could be the offering of the bread and wine.

Thus was born his incredible “Mass on the World,” which can be found in full in his book The Heart of the Matter.

In 2015, contemplative, mystic, and writer the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault, finding herself and a retreat group she was leading in somewhat similar circumstances, crafted a liturgical version of this five-part prose poem, which she has offered for public use.

Join the Rev. Clare Morgan and friends in this offering to the Holy One on behalf of the world, in anticipation of the amazing gifts Jesus will give us this week. All are welcome.
