During his lifetime, Franz Schubert's music was appreciated by a close circle of friends and patrons, who organized musical gatherings known as Schubertiades to celebrate his musical genius. Schubertiade Salon Series aims to continue the spirit of these original musical gatherings by presenting Schubert's music in a more informal salon setting, thus championing the sublime music of this great, yet somewhat enigmatic composer.

On the heels of the successful Season Debut Concert, the Schubertiade Salon Series returns to Christ Church Cathedral with another program (An Evening of Schubertian Delights) on Friday October 24th, to celebrate the glorious music of this great Viennese composer. Co-founder, pianist Ronald Sat, will be joined by two distinguished local musicians, violinist Ken Lin and cellist Ashton Lim.

The program will open with Schubert's ethereal Notturno in E-flat major for Piano Trio. This substantial but relatively neglected piece has affinities with the slow movements of both the String Quintet in C and the Piano Trio in B-flat. The three artists will then present a transcription of three famous Schubert Lieder: Der Einsame, Die Forelle and Die Junge Nonne along with recitation of the original poetry that inspired Schubert's music.

The transcriptions will be followed by a change in instrumentation: 2nd and 3rd movements from of one of Schubert's most beloved works, the Piano Sonata in A major, Op. 120. A charming, delightful work, the Sonata was written in a very happy part of Schubert's life. This Schubertiade will conclude with the 3rd and 4th movements of his popular Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major. Written the year before his death, it is a late large-scale work that doesn't feel like
one; it feels intimate.
